Sacred Art Collection
A growing collection of sacred works honoring Jeremiah's fascination with religious symbols and spiritual history.
Reflections on my Sacred Art Collection
During my early childhood, I was raised by my grandparents - entangled in an environment practicing a strict and aggressive brand of Calvinism.
The reality of this for me was that to create representational art of any kind was seen as a prideful act of idolatry - worthy of inciting the “Wrath of God” from my grandfather. (How does one say this delicately?) - no quarter was given.
In truth, it often was a harsh world for a child - with severe repercussions close at hand. However, to draw became my refuge - one that I learned to hide by using the nap of the living room rug. Shadows one way … highlights the other … & instantly erasable should anyone come near. I have come to call this childhood canvas the “Poor Man’s Etch-a-Sketch”.
I believe that Picasso once said that it took him a “lifetime to paint like a child”. With that in mind - Would that I always have my childhood self’s tenacity to defy and to create … And would that that child’s instinctive fascination and joy in the beauty of the world never be far from me - come what may in the journey ahead.
From the "ashes" and triumphs of this upbringing, I developed a deeply polarized, life-long fascination with religious imagery. The collection that I offer here is the outcome of my hard-won freedom to create, to learn and to grow as a self-guided, spiritual individual in the world - rather than a trammelled and down-trodden follower.
This growing Collection celebrates the beauty I have discovered on my journey through life - and also stands as a challenge to the dogmas that I cannot reconcile.
