CORMORANT AND MOON JELLYFISH - SCULPTURE DETAILS

Fantastic news!! It is my genuine pleasure to share with you that my relief sculpture, "Cormorant and Moon Jellyfish," has received the Anna Hyatt Huntington Award as well as a Brookgreen Medal in the National Sculpture Society 87th Annual Awards Exhibition, 2020.

This year's Jury of Awards convened during the past week and made their final selections. I am humbled and honored to have my sculpture recognized by this panel of remarkable and accomplished artists and art professionals!

Additionally, what further excites me about receiving The Anna Hyatt Huntington Award - is that now “Cormorant and Moon Jellyfish” will also be travelling to the NSS Gallery in Manhattan, to be displayed as part of the NSS Prize Winners Exhibition from Nov 30, 2020 - Feb 5, 2021.

NSS 87TH ANNUAL- ANNA HYATT HUNTINGTON AWARD - 2020

What an incredible opportunity to share both this individual work, as well as my unique vision for vibrant, high-craft bas relief sculpture - with the visitors, artists and collectors who stop by to explore the new NSS Gallery in New York!

My sincerest thanks to each of the judges on both the Juries of Selection and Awards this year - as well as to everyone at both NSS headquarters and the Brookgreen Gardens for their thoughtfulness, time and energy in making this wonderful exhibition possible!

My very best wishes to all!! JDW

CORMORANT AND MOON JELLYFISH's sculpture's dialogue reads:

"I walked along my local river every morning in Tokyo, and through these wanders I became fascinated by the motion and energy of cormorants. With a turn of the head and a swirl of water they could transform themselves from ungainly terrestrials into efficient sub-surface hunters. One day, however, I found my river changed - overwhelmed by a jellyfish swarm. Water clarity was gone, the fish population soon devastated - and the once vibrant cormorant population ultimately left or perished. How very fragile is our world! Here then is my sculptural record of a microcosmic ecological collapse, with macrocosmic implications." JDW

National Sculpture Society 86th Annual Awards Exhibition

"The annual juried exhibition of the National Sculpture Society, the oldest professional organization of sculptors in America, presents the work of masters alongside rising stars in American sculpture. Brookgreen Gardens is the only venue for this exhibit. Fifteen awards are presented by the Society along with the popular People’s Choice Award, determined by votes of visitors to Brookgreen Gardens. This exhibit is on display in both the Jenniwein and Noble Galleries in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion and is included with garden admission"
